The importance of accents
Welcome back!
Accents define who we are in a way, opens up a new door to our identity, a new feature that makes us unique and stand out from others. It is important to remember to not forget our own personal accents as it makes us more special. A quotation from a topical issue says the following: ‘It is important that we teach children that, to get on, they must speak Standard English with an RP accent’. In my opinion this is wrong, individuals don't have to have an RP accent to fit in, fitting in to society is natural you don't have to change in order to fit in. You are who you are if people don't respect that and tell you to change that's wrong and the individual shouldn't even take changing into consideration because they are unique the way they are.
Why do we have accents?
'The reason there are different accents is because languages change. Accents arise because people that speak the same language separate geographically or socially and the versions of the shared language they speak being to differentiate from each other.'
This quotation proves that accents are important as 'languages change' which means there are more languages in the world which shows that the world is multicultural and its amazing. There are roughly 6500 languages in the world some are spoken by large amounts of people and some are only spoken by a small amount however every language has its own unique accent that no one can take away from them.
I'm against the statement that its important for children to have an RP accent to fit in. This is because if you think about it in London there is over 300 different languages spoken on a daily bases and each language comes with its own accent. Children in schools learn different languages for example French, Spanish and German while learning the languages they will pick a specific accent linked to the language so when speaking in that language they will sound like everyone else. In a English school there is over 300 possible nationalities that speak a different language, they don't speak standard English however they still fit in, society accepts them and children that are foreign still make friends with children that are English as there language doesn't define the way people treat each other. Therefore its not important to teach children standard English or to teach them to have a different accent as it doesn't matter, society accepts people the way they are that's why the Equality Act of 2010 was made as it states that age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation should not be discriminated against therefore whatever accent you have, what part of the world you came from you are still an individual that has the right to feel comfortable in their surroundings and not be discriminated against.
Thank you for reading and make sure you don't forget your accent or try to change who you are because you are unique and your accent makes you even more special. :)
